This guide focuses on Impact Receipts.
Your Story Matters has two ways to take part: share your story or create an Impact Receipt below. You don't need a receipt to share your story.

Without this tool: "The 12-week delay was really hard for us." With this tool: "The 12-week delay caused 62 nights of disrupted sleep, 42 school days affected, 98 advocacy hours by me (as a single parent), plus £270 in lost wages. This is measurable, documented, and defensible."
Illustrative example
This tool is designed to help with: ✓ Parents pursuing school exclusion complaints ✓ Single parents filing ombudsman complaints ✓ Carers documenting CAMHS waitlist impact ✓ Families preparing for tribunal or judicial review ✓ Self-represented families in formal complaints ✓ Parents wanting to understand and record their impact
Illustrative example
Example: A 12-week EHCP assessment delay results in: - 62 nights of disrupted sleep (weeks × 5.2 nights) - 42 school days affected (weeks × 3.5 days) - 98 advocacy hours for a single parent (weeks × 7 × 2) - Plus mental health deterioration, trust erosion, and sibling impact This isn't blame. It's documentation.
Illustrative example
Example input: - Decision: "EHCP assessment delayed" - Dates: Jan 1 - Mar 31 (12 weeks) - Domains: Education, mental health, sleep, caregiver - Child age: 8 years old - Single parent: Yes - Caregiver: Full-time employed - Days off work: 3 days - Wage: £12/hour → Receipt shows 3 × 7.5 × 12 = £270 in lost wages
Illustrative example
A receipt might show: + 62 nights of disrupted sleep + 42 school days affected + 15 mental health crisis days + 98 advocacy work hours + £270 lost wages + 3 family relationship strain incidents → "This harm was preventable" → Statutory breach: Exceeded EHCP 20-week limit by 0 weeks (at boundary)
Illustrative example
History shows: ✓ Receipt 1: EHCP delay (12 weeks, 5 statutory breaches) ✓ Receipt 2: School exclusion (6 weeks, no breaches) ✓ Receipt 3: CAMHS waitlist (18 weeks, at legal limit) Click "Compare" to analyze patterns across your case history.
Illustrative example
Comparing 3 receipts: Receipt A (EHCP): 20 weeks, 0 statutory breaches Receipt B (CAMHS): 24 weeks, 1 statutory breach Receipt C (Diagnosis): 15 weeks, 0 statutory breaches Comparison shows: - Average: 19.7 weeks - Total breaches: 1 - All cases affected: Mental health, education, family - Pattern: Long waits across multiple services
Illustrative example
You might send: "Dear [Authority], Attached is documentation of the impact of the 14-week delay in [service]. As detailed in the receipt, this caused 73 nights of disrupted sleep, 49 school days affected, and £300 in lost wages. We are prepared to escalate this to formal complaint unless [resolution]." + PDF attachment
Illustrative example
Timeline of escalation: Week 1: Generate receipt on this platform Week 2: Send to local authority as stage 1 complaint (attach PDF) Week 8: If rejected, escalate to ombudsman (attach receipt) Month 4: Ombudsman decision (may include compensation) OR: Simultaneously pursue tribunal (SEND cases) OR: Contact MP (generates political pressure)
Illustrative example
For a 12-week EHCP delay, single parent, full-time employed: Sleep: 12 × 5.2 × 2 = 124 nights School: 12 × 3.5 × 1 = 42 days Work hours: 12 × 7 × 2 = 168 hours Mental health: 12 × 6 = 72 days anxiety Burnout: 12 ÷ 10 = 1.2 crisis points Total: Quantified, defensible, evidence-based.
Illustrative example
Strong use case: Year 1: Receipt for diagnosis delay (10 weeks) → complaint rejected Year 2: Receipt for EHCP delay (16 weeks) → included in tribunal Year 3: Receipt for therapy delay (8 weeks) → shows pattern All 3 receipts together = "This authority systematically fails timelines" → Stronger case
Common Questions
Is my data private?
Yes. Your receipts are stored in your private account. You decide what to share and with whom.
Can I edit a receipt after creating it?
You can create drafts and edit them before finalizing. Once finalized, create a new receipt with updated dates if circumstances change.
Will this guarantee a win in tribunal?
No. This provides evidence of impact. You'll still need legal representation and supporting documents. Use this alongside medical evidence, school reports, and communication logs.
What if my case doesn't fit any category?
Select "Other" and describe your situation. The platform calculates impact the same way.
Can I document multiple incidents?
Create separate receipts for each distinct period. Use the comparison feature to analyze patterns across receipts.
